Permit FAQs

The Water Heater LLC is able to obtain a permit on your behalf if the city or county you reside in requires one for a water heater installation. If you elect to have The Water Heater LLC obtain this for you, the city permit fee and processing fee will be included in your invoice.

If a contractor is reluctant to obtain a permit, chances are they are cutting corners on your installation. It’s your responsibility as a homeowner to insist that your contractor permit the installation, if required by the city. Why? If there is no permit on record, you may be held liable should an insurance claim be submitted in the unfortunate case of fire or flood related to your installation.

All water heater installations must conform to local plumbing codes and city requirements, which varies by location. A permit may be required for a water heater replacement in the jurisdiction you reside. These permits are necessary to ensure proper installation and the safety of your home.

The Water Heater LLC is able to obtain the permit, if necessary.

Once the required city permit is obtained and the installation is complete, an inspection should be scheduled. A city building inspector will perform an overview of the installation to make sure it was done correctly. Regardless if the inspection was scheduled by you or the contractor, the water heater must be accessible to the inspector. Typically, an inspector will leave a report, sticker, or other form of approval if the water heater install “passed” inspection.

If code violations are noted, the contractor or person who installed the water heater is responsible to fix anything determined incorrect at inspection.

The inspector will look for proper installation of the water heater to local code ensuring it does not create a hazard to the homeowner or building occupants. There are many dangers associated with improper installation of a water heater, whether it be gas-fired or electrical. The dangers can include: scalding, fuel gas leaks, ignition sources, fires, explosions, water leak damage, mold, structural stability and dangerous carbon monoxide.

The cost of a permit to install a water heater varies between building jurisdictions, cities and counties. The price can range from $25-$100 depending on local requirements.
